CHAPTER 9

“Did you talk to Nora about dating?” Goldie Bennett started in as soon as I sat down.

“You were going to give dating advice?” Mama looked so shocked. “I mean, we have strict commandments when it comes to dating.” She sat straight as a stick with her ankles crossed. “It was how I got your daddy.”

Did she forget that she’d also left my daddy?

“First off, Nora needs to know that she’s got to dress a little better. Impressing the mama and daddy of her suitor is important. Which means she needs to be chivalrous and state right off the bat she needs to be treated like royalty.” As Mama gave Goldie her dating commandments, I was starting to see why I was single. “Which circles right back around to how she looks. Nora is a pretty girl, but it looks like it takes her less than five minutes to get ready. Now that just won’t do. It takes me five minutes to put on my second coat of lipstick.”

I sighed and stared out the trolley’s windows. The smell of the sea had long passed as the trolley made its way to the countryside of Holiday Junction. Freshly rolled hay wafted through the windows and reminded me of taking hayrides at the local pumpkin patch when I was a child. Those memories included Mama and Daddy, reminding me I’d yet to call him back. I needed to.

“Not that I see Nora doing this, but she certainly doesn’t need to chase any men, flirt with every one of them, or cross the line of a hoochie mama.” Goldie snorted out loud, just encouraging Mama to continue. “She needs to master dating. If he likes to boat, hike, or just read, she needs to be able to do all of those activities and seem like she enjoys them. Ain’t that right, Violet?”

“Mm-hmm.” I just agreed, though I was still thinking about Carol Dunn and how to approach the subject of Peter Hill.

“Now, I don’t know if Nora has any exes, but she’s going to run into them in this small village if she does. She needs to know how to handle those situations. And don’t get me started on how she needs to expect a big wedding. Full wedding regalia portrait and all. China registry and at least nine or ten bridesmaids.” Mama had done married off poor Nora. “Don’t get me going on her fingernails. Poor girl chews them down to the nubbins. But most important of all, she’s gonna have to realize she’s gonna always play second fiddle to the spouse’s parents. That’s why Violet hasn’t found the right man yet. Right, Violet?”

“Whatever you say, Mama.” I found Mama’s commandments on dating similar to directions southerners gave. You know, go yonder and turn by the big flagpole. Once you turn there, you’ll go about ’nother mile or two until you see that big rock on the side of the road. Once you’re past that, you’ll see a gravel road to the right.
